Calamus is quite common in Manipur and the Naga Hills of India and is found on the edges of lakes and streams. The root is attributed with an intensely aromatic fragrance that resembles a mixture of ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. In ancient times it was even used as a cinnamon substitute in ritual incenses. In Ayurveda, calamus is considered an aromatic, bitter tonic which stimulates digestion. Similar in appearance to ginger, calamus root’s sweet smell has made it a key component in perfumes.
Be careful when choosing the Calamus root you buy. You can find plenty of calamus from China and India. Our Calamus is hand gathered in the Oregon wilderness and brought to you in unadulterated form. There are many varieties available. Our calamus is always American Calamus (Americanus), which grows only in the northern United States. Acorus calamus var. Americanus contains plenty of Alpha-asarone, but it lacks significant amounts of Beta-asarone, which is suspected of being carcinogenic.*
