Muira Puama Root

Presently, the exact mechanism of action of this herb is still under investigation. Based on preliminary studies, it appears that it may help to support both psychological and physical aspects of sexual function.

Another study at the Institute of Sexology investigated the possibility of combining Muira Puama with a standardized extract of Ginkgo leaf for the support of female sexual function. The combination was tested in a study of 202 healthy women reporting low libido. For 65% of the women taking the supplement, significant improvements compared to baseline scores were reported for sexual desires, intercourse, excitement, fantasies, satisfaction, ease in reaching orgasm, and orgasm intensity.

Today, Muira Puama is being used worldwide. The popularity of the plant was due to early European explorers who brought it back to their respective countries to study its potential benefits, including those for healthy sexual function. Muira Puama is listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, a noted herbal medicine source from the British Herbal Medicine Association.
