Passiflora incarnata is a subtropical vine native to the Americas. The herbaceous shoots bear three-lobed, finely-serrated leaves and highly ornamental, flesh-colored or yellowish, sweet-scented flowers, tinged with purple. The ripe, orange-colored, ovoid, many-seeded berry is about the size of a small apple. The yellow pulp is sweet and edible.
The dried, above-ground parts are listed in the pharmacopoeias of the U.S., India, Great Britain, and other countries. Passionflower seems to have a calming effect and is traditionally enjoyed as a relaxing tea* at any time of day, but especially about 1 hour to 30 minutes before bed to encourage healthy sleep*.
In a double-blind trial, healthy adults who drank a tea made from passionflower (flowers, leaves, seeds, and stems) for 1 week showed a subjectively higher quality of sleep than those who drank a placebo tea.*
Directions: To make a tea, pour hot water (150 mL) over 1 teaspoonful (2–3 g) of the dried herb and strain after 10 minutes. Drink 1 cup of the freshly prepared tea 2–3 times per day and 30 minutes before sleep. No matter the time of day, Passionflower makes a GREAT tea!
