Sugandi has been used as an incense by shamans for many, many years. In the Himalayas, the herb is ground to a coarse powder with dried leaves or seeds of Holy Basil, Bel Fruit or flowers of lotus (such as our 3 Lotus Paste) jasmine and safflower and then burned as a ritual incense.
In ancient texts compiled between the 13th and 16th Centuries by a royal physician on the banks of holy rivers, the herb commonly called sugandi is a vital tonic for the mind, as per original Sanskrit texts on Ayurveda. Another name for the plant is ‘the eternal root’ as its root spreads for a long way underground. This is a ‘delicious’ herb according to traditional Tibetan medicine – it smells sweet and aromatic- and is also known as sugandhi, ‘the fragrant one’ in Hindi.
The roots are called the “symbols of human mind on the earth” and really look like “little neurons” complete with “synapses and glias”.
